Fan Parks For The 2010 World Cup
Fan Parks For The 2010 World Cup

During the 2010 world cup in South Africa fan parks will be set up in every hosting city. Based on the successes of the fan parks in Germany during the 2006 world cup, they will aim on creating a party like fun and festive atmosphere. The matches will be shown live on big screen TVs and there will be all day entertainment in between.

South Africa’s aim is to recreate the party atmosphere of the fan parks set up in Germany in 2006 that was such a huge success.

Johannesburg fan parks: Mary Fitzgerald Square in the Newtown precinct has been earmarked as one of the potential Johannesburg sites for Fan parks during 2010. In August 2007 a fan park was set up in Dobsonville, in Soweto and was a great success; and Fan Parks in Soweto might be expected.

Apart from a Fan Park on Mary Fitzgerald Square in Jozi's Newtown, other Fan Parks in Johannesburg will include Innes-Free Park in Sandton, as well as Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown.

Cape Town fan park:

Locations for the proposed Cape Town fan parks during the 2010 Soccer World Cup include Grand Parade in front of the City Hall, the covered all-weather venue Bellville Velodrome, and the Athlone Stadium. Both Gansbaai and Plettenberg Bay are being considered as possible towns to have fan parks outside of Cape Town.

From the latest information, the fan parks in and around Cape Town will be divided into three sectors.

  • 1. The official FIFA fan park at the Grand Parade and the fan mile.
  • 2. The fan park at the Bellville Velodrome, a fan park at Phillipi Stadium and a fan park at Athlone Stadium and
  • 3. The four smaller community viewing sites at Atlantis, Khayelitsha, Nomzamo and Maynardville.
  • The 2010 Fan mile in Cape Town will stretch from the station through Riebeeck Street & Somerset Road all the way to the Green Point Stadium.

Fan Parks For The 2010 World Cup Nelson Mandela bay Fan Park:

One of the oldest schools in Port Elizabeth, Sydenham Primary, plans to renovate its building to compliment the modern design of the 2010 soccer stadium, which is on its doorstep.

There is a possibility that the schoolyard will be converted into a fan park, hosting a marquee tent with a big screen television.

Durban fan parks:

The Durban Beach Front has been earmarked as one of Durban’s preferred sites for one or more Fan Parks during 2010

Tshwane (Pretoria) fan park

Potential Fan Park and Public Viewing sites are being scouted in Pretoria (Tshwane) and organisers are looking for safe, open spaces to provide a party like atmosphere for fans not lucky enough to purchase game tickets for the Pretoria games.

The soccer matches will be shown live at the Fan Parks on big screen TVs and there will be all day entertainment in-between.
