There are two theories as to how the village received its name. Some say it is named after Captain Hogg, the Commander of Fort Michell, whilst others say it is due to the fact that one of the three peaks that overlook the village, when seen from a certain angle, resembles a Hog's Back, which is a name for a rock formation. Nevertheless, the Hogs Back Reserve which situated in the beautiful Amatola Mountains in the Eastern Cape is magical!
