Views : “FIFA never doubted SA”: Valcke

The international football governing body, FIFA never doubted South Africa’s ability to host the world cup, its secretary general, Jerome Valcke said on Sunday.

Valcke was addressing scores of journalists from across the globe at the Global Media Face Off conference at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium where he refuted claims that the world soccer body ever doubted South Africa's ability to host the 2010 soccer World Cup or that it had worked on Plan B just in case South Africa does not pull through.

FIFA has never been working on a Plan B about another country organising the 2010 World Cup 2010. We just need to make that clear,” said Valcke.
Valcke said FIFA has never worked with countries like Australia that offered to be alternative hosts, should South Africa fail.

It’s only 31 days left before this world’s biggest soccer tournament kicks off and historically, it will be for the first time ever on the African continent. Construction is still underway on some of the host cities but FIFA does not see that as a sign of being unready or failure. During the 100-days countdown celebrations, Valcke had said “If you can build stadiums, how can you doubt that a few bricks will be laid or a few trees will be planted?”. He said this responding to concerns and questions from worldwide if everything would be ready in time.

Valcke had even said that all the criticism directed at South Africa about being late did not surprise FIFA.

“It was the same with Germany. There was criticism. We’re not surprised. Criticism is part of the organising (of any tournament),” he said.
