Sports : SA secure series victory

Hashim Amla struck an undefeated century as South Africa secured a series win over India thanks to a 33-run win on the Duckworth/Lewis method in the fifth MTN one-day international at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday.

However, the hosts had to withstand a savage assault from Yusuf Pathan who blasted his way to 105 off a mere 70 balls, with eight fours and eight sixes, before India were bowled out for 234 in the 41st over.

Amla ended not out on 116 off 132 balls to help the Proteas to 250 for nine, after the match was reduced to a 46-overs-per-side affair, after a rain delay of an hour and 20 minutes during South Africa’s innings

The loss of overs meant that India were set a Duckworth/Lewis adjusted total of 268 to win but they were eventually bowled out for 234 in the 41st over as South Africa edged the series 3-2.
India had looked out of the match as they sunk to 119 for eight in the 23rd over as they struggled in the face of a fiery South Africa pace attack.

MIGHTY PATHAN

But Pathan found a willing ally in the form of Zaheer Khan (24) and the duo put on 100 runs for the ninth wicket off just 12.4 overs.

Pathan was particularly strong on the leg-side and, at the height of his assault; he pummelled 20 runs off a Lonwabo Tsotsobe over with a sequence that read 6, 0, 4, 6, 4.

The powerful Pathan reached his half-century off 47 balls and needed just 21 more deliveries to bring up three figures for the second time in ODIs.

Just as the visitors would have begun believing that they could pull off an unlikely victory Pathan top-edged a delivery from paceman Morne Morkel and was caught at extra cover.

Pathan left the ground to a standing ovation but his efforts were in vain with man-of-the-series Morkel being the stand-out performer with the ball as he ended with figures of four for 52 off eight overs to finish the series with 12 wickets.

BIG PARTNERSHIPS

Amla had earlier proved to be the rock during South Africa’s innings as the opening batsman brought up his seventh ODI century off 113 balls.

After India won the toss and elected to field, the elegant Amla shared in two big partnerships as he put on 97 for the second wicket with Morne van Wyk and 102 for the fourth-wicket with JP Duminy (35).

Amla did enjoy one slice of luck when, with his score on 70, substitute fielder Ravi Ashwin put down a regulation catch at square leg off the bowling of off-spinner Rohit Sharma.

Van Wyk was in a particularly aggressive mood as he raced to 56 off 63 balls before he was superbly caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh who stuck out his left hand to pull off a reflex catch.

However, the hosts looked to be well positioned as they reached 226 for three off 42 overs before rain forced a delay.

When play resumed the Proteas were left with four overs to bat but they suffered a horrendous collapse to let India back into the contest.

The men in green lost six wickets for the addition of just 24 runs after the resumption of play due to a combination of good bowling from pacemen Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel, and some injudicious shot making and running from the home side.

Duminy was caught and bowled by Patel in the 43rd over before the same bowler struck twice in his next over when he bowled Faf du Plessis (8) and had Johan Botha (2) caught by keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Zaheer was tasked with bowling the last over of the innings and he bowled Robin Peterson (4) before Dale Steyn (0) and Morkel (0) both fell in the same fashion with both men trying to run a single to the keeper.

On both occasions Dhoni scored direct hits to run the batsmen out as South Africa’s quest for late runs faltered.

Patel finished with figures three for fifty off eight overs while there were two wickets apiece for Zaheer and Yuvraj.
