Celebs : Shrien Dewani arrested in UK

Shrien Dewani was arrested in London last night for suspected involvement in his wife Anni's murder, the BBC reported today. He was arrested at 11pm London time at the request of South African authorities, Scotland Yard told the broadcaster.

"A spokesperson said he had surrendered himself at a police station in Bristol yesterday and was later arrested on suspicion of conspiring to murder his wife," its website said. Mr Dewani, from Westbury-on-Trym, was expected to appear in the Westminster Magistrates Court later today.

Local authorities could not confirm the arrest this morning. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazilila was also not aware of it. The arrest comes hours after the Western Cape High Court heard that it cost Mr Dewani a mere R16 000 to have his new bride killed by a pair of South African thugs.

This emerged as one of his accomplices, Cape Town shuttle driver Zola Tongo, 31, was jailed for an effective 18 years for his role in the plot. He told the court Mr Dewani had paid him to kill his wife.

Meanwhile, it is not clear whether Mr Dewani will be extradited from the United Kingdom to answer to damning claims that he orchestrated the death of his wife. Police say they will be working with the NPA and other relevant departments to ensure any outstanding issues regarding the murder investigation are carried forward in a co-ordinated fashion.

Mr Dewani has denied the allegations. National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has also declined to comment on the possibility of an application for Mr Dewani's extradition. He says police will follow all prescripts of the law regarding international protocols. – Additional reporting by Sapa/ SABCNEWS
