Celebs : Royal wedding! Prince William, Kate Middleton announce engagement

LONDON — Britain's Prince William will marry his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton in London in 2011, the royal family said Tuesday.
The pair will wed in the spring or summer, according to a statement from the prince's official residence Clarence House.
Recent speculation about the site of the event has focused on Westminster Abbey, where the funeral for the prince's mother, Princess Diana, was held in 1997. But the palace remained mum on details. "Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course," the statement said.

Prince William, second in line to the throne, proposed during an October vacation to Kenya, according to the statement.
"Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family," the statement said. "Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father."
Prime Minister David Cameron said he was delighted by the news. "It's a great moment for national celebration, but we also need to remember that we must give them plenty of space to think about the future," he said outside his residence 10 Downing Street.
Cameron said he was passed a piece of paper relating the news during a cabinet meeting. He said he then shared the news with his ministers and "a cheer went up."
isions of a royal wedding
The couple, who met more than eight years ago as students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, will live in north Wales after they're married. Prince William is currently serving there with the Royal Air Force.
Middleton will now have Scotland Yard protection with her, royal expert and News of the World correspondent Robert Jobson said on TODAY. He recently reported that William wanted a female bodyguard for Kate.
Jobson also speculated that the pair will be given new titles before their wedding. William will likely be known as Prince William Duke of Cambridge and she will be knows as the Duchess of Cambridge.
The prince once told an interviewer he wouldn't marry "until I'm at least 28 or maybe 30." He turned 28 in June and recently completed training as a Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot.Visions of a royal wedding have been stoked by the visit several weeks ago of Kate's parents — Michael and Carole Middleton — to Balmoral, Queen Elizabeth II's 50,000-acre estate in Scotland. It marked the first time the Middletons had been invited to such an intimate royal gathering.
The event sent Britain's tabloids into a tizzy and prompted bookmakers to lower the odds at Britain's legal betting shops, reflecting the conventional wisdom that Middleton would soon be a princess and in line to become queen.
Commentators have been anticipating a summer 2011 wedding, a date that avoids both the Olympics and Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, both due to be held in 2012. Bookmakers stopped taking bets on a 2011 wedding months ago, saying all signs were pointing to a marriage next year.
Britain's royal watchers said the invitation to Balmoral was a way of welcoming the middle class Middletons into the very highest realm of British society. Middleton is not from the aristocracy. Her parents worked for British Airways before founding Party Pieces, a successful party-supply business. She works for the family business.
But her background is acceptable, and perhaps even an advantage, as the British monarchy prepares to modernize and streamline in an age of austerity. Source MSNBC
