Celebs : Idols: Final showdown

This is it – Elvis Blue from George and Lloyd Cele from Durban faced off in the Idols 6 final showdown last night.

Each contestant performed three numbers. First, the Idols Producers' Choice, then their own favourite song from the competition and finally the new songs composed especially for them which the winner will release next week as his first single!

For this final showdown the Idols were judged one last time by the original Idols judging panel: Randall Abrahams, Mara Louw and Gareth Cliff. But first, a surprise guest artist… Last year's joint winner Sasha-Lee Davids set the tone for the evening's entertainment with a rousing rendition of her new hit, Before You.

Earlier this week Elvis and Lloyd had flipped a coin to decide in which order they would sing. Elvis won and he chose for Lloyd to sing first. The standout performance that the producers chose for Lloyd was from the Top 8 Spectacular: The Parlotones' Push Me to the Floor. Gareth said he didn't think it was possible for Lloyd to improve on his original rendition of that song, but he did. "You've really raised the bar tonight," Mara agreed. Randall wryly noted that the boxing analogies of the evening did not go unnoticed. "Let's… get… ready… to rrrruumble!" he announced dramatically!

For Elvis, the producers selected Bob Dylan's To Make You Feel My Love, which had Mara in tears at his original audition in Cape Town! "Remember watching one of your favourite stars on TV or in concert and thinking it must be amazing to be that guy?" Gareth asked Elvis. "Well, tonight you are that guy." Mara confided that a man had recently proposed marriage to her using those very lyrics and that it makes her swoon. "Head-to-head and toe-to-toe it's going to be a very hard choice tonight," Randall noted. "And you are such good friends too... But there can only be one winner," he pointed out – as if the Top Two needed reminding! "Give it a thousand percent," he encouraged Elvis.

Jody Williams understands all too well what the Top 2 were going through tonight – she emerged as the winner in Season 4 of Idols back in 2007! Last night she was back on the Idols stage to encourage the boys with her brand new single, Don't Stop the Music.

For his second performance of the evening Lloyd chose Bruno Mars' Just the Way You Are as his personal favourite song of the season. Gareth had to wait for the loud cheers to die down, and then he sang to Lloyd: "when you sing the while world listens for a while…" However, Gareth did note that it wasn't a perfect performance, to loud boos from the audience, "but we're at such a level right now, I'm just gonna shut up!" he conceded. "The song says it," Mara beamed. "Lloyd you're amazing just the way you are!" Randall noted that Lloyd said he chose the song based on what his fans liked. "I think over the next couple of days your fan base is going to grow exponentially," he predicted. "Sucker punch, Lloyd, sucker punch!" he smiled, extending his boxing metaphor of earlier.
Elvis's favourite song of the season was the moving Leonard Cohen anthem, Hallelujah, which he said the fans had requested on Facebook. "Now, I don't know much about that religious music," Gareth drawled in a broad Southern American accent, "but I'm feelin' like a Baptist minister right now who needs to get his handkerchief out! Oh, Lordy!" Mara said Hallelujah was "one of the most beautiful songs ever written in recent times", and that Elvis had done a great job with it. Randall joked that he could understand why Mara would think a song written in the Seventies was "recent". He reminded Elvis that he wasn't entirely convinced the first time he sang that song, "but you did a really good job tonight – you deserve to be here."

Just before the Top Two took to the stage again with their final performance of the evening, last season's co-winner Jason Hartman returned with his hit, Break the Silence.

And then it was time: the final songs that Elvis and Lloyd would sing for those all-important viewers' votes. These are the brand-new tracks that the Top Two have recorded as their first singles, and they're available for download right now on www.mnet.co.za/idols. Alternatively, you can SMS the name of the single to 39400 for immediate download!

Lloyd's song is called Thanks To You. "It's crunch time," Gareth said in his final assessment. "You've done all you can – now it's down to the votes." He said he was proud of both competitors. "When I first saw you in Durban I wasn't sure if you were gonna go this far," Mara admitted. "But you have surprised me all the way through – you just grew and grew and you really gave your best."
"It's been an exceptionally long season, and a difficult one," Randall reminisced. "You've gone fifteen rounds toe-to-toe and you've never let yourself down," he praised Lloyd. "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!"

Elvis closed the show tonight with his new song that will be released as his first single, called Things My Father Said. "This is anybody's game right now and I'm very pleased we don't have to make the choice," Gareth said. "Good luck, my man."
"So am I, Gareth," Mara agreed. "I'm pleased we don't have to say anything except wish you well." And Randall predicted that Elvis could probably already envision Wednesday's newspaper headline saying "Elvis is King"!

And then they were done… There is nothing more for Elvis and Lloyd to do but await the result of the fans' votes. Voting opened at the start of last night's broadcast and will close at 10pm Monday evening. The rules are simple: the contestant with the most votes wins.

Tuesday evening's Idols Season 6 Finale promises to be a spectacular show, with performances by The Parlotones' Kahn Morbee, Loyiso Bala, HHP, Steve Hofmeyr, Zolani from Freshly Ground, and loads more surprises! Tickets to the show are completely sold out and only ticket holders will be able to join in the fun at the Mosaïek Teatro in Fairlands, Johannesburg. This live finale will start at 6.55pm and end at 8.30pm on M-Net.
