Sports : Day 1 of Delhi Games hit by dengue fever

As team South Africa battles a string of no-shows by athletes at the Commonwealth Games, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) on Sunday said it was impressed with the opening ceremony and happy with the facilities provided at the athletes’ village.

But there were reports on Monday morning that at least one Indian official, who is living at the athletes’ village, has contracted the deadly dengue fever, a painful illness spread through mosquito bites.

Doctors said his condition is stable.

2010 COMMONWEALTH GAMES OPENING CEREMONY

The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony went ahead on Sunday without trouble as thousands of dancers and musicians entertained the crowd and the teams paraded through the stadium

The Commonwealth nations in attendance and the two billion television viewers were left captivated by the mixer of tradition and technology.

The games were officially opened by the President of India Pratibha Patil and Britain’s Prince Charles.
TEAM SA AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The South African team at the Commonwealth Games is without Women’s 800 metres world champion Caster Semenya, men’s 800m champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Olympic long jump silver medalist Khotso Mokoena, who faces a disciplinary hearing from Sascoc for refusing to get on the plane to the games.

Sascoc said despite a slew of athlete pull-outs, the sporting body is fully behind team South Africa.

The South African track and field contingent at the games is only six strong but Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy said he is not concerned about the size or the makeup of team SA.

“Our team is our team based on our selection policy those are the people that have qualified. All of them are here on merit,” said Reddy. Source EWN
