Sports : Winning start for coach Mosimane

The new South African coach Pitso Mosimane poured sand on his so called ‘baptism of fire’ when his side beat Ghana 1-0 in an international friendly at the FNB stadium on Wednesday night.

Mosimane made some wholesale changes to the side that took part in the 2010 Fifa World Cup and with good effect as the Bafana looked the superior side from the first whistle. The win was well deserved as Bafana, once again, did their nation proud.

South Africa certainly showed in the opening 45 minutes that they could compete with the best Africa has to offer when they completely dictated terms, controlling the midfield and dominating the possession stakes

The home side’s intentions were clear from early on as they looked to press forward in attack and almost found the game’s opening goal in the fourth minute.

Bernard Parker produced a mesmerising run from just inside his own half, beating two defenders, before slipping a through-ball for Katlego Mphela to run onto and with just the keeper to beat. The Ghanaian keeper, however, was quickly off his line to smother Mphela’s attempted chip over him.

In stark retrospect it was a real jittery start by Ghana as they looked slow to the ball and often gifted possession back to South Africa with some sloppy passing.

In the 16th minute Mphela found himself with another great opportunity to open the scoring, this time after Siphiwe Tshabalala split the Ghanaian defence with a great through-ball. Still, Richard Kingson was determined not to be beat and produced another great one-on-one save to deny Mphela for the second time.

Ghana’s only chance of the half came in the 23rd minute and was a woeful long range shot from Kwadwo Asamoah that went well wide.

As they half went on Bafana continued to pile on the pressure and push men forward in attack. Finally in the 42nd minute of the game Mphela was able to break the deadlock.

For the third time in the game the Ghanaian defence was cut wide open by a deep through-ball from the midfield, this time Steven Pienaar setting Mphela up. On the third attempt the Bafana striker made no mistake slipping the ball past a sprawling Kingson, 1-0.

The second half started with a real cut and thrust to it as Ghana looked to get back on even terms and South Africa looked to hit on the counter-attack. This resulted in some end-to-end action, but with no real threats on goal.

Thereafter, however, the quality of the football took a dip as the game became disjointed with both sides making a number of substitutes, destroying the rhythm of the match.

In the end Bafana were able to hold on for a well deserved 1-0 win over the quarterfinalists of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Source SUPERSPORT
