News : The world celebrates Mandela Day

People across the world on Sunday celebrated Mandela Day, donating 67 minutes of their time to those in need.

While Madiba spent a quiet day at home, celebrating his 92nd birthday with his family, others spent their day feeding street children, cleaning schools and helping

A doctor at the clinic who is usually behind a podium lecturing students said he would love to volunteer at the clinic again.

“I have not been to a hospital in ages so I thought it was a unique opportunity for me to give to my people and give back to the country. I would definitely do it 10 times over,” he said.

The CEO of the clinic Lebani Maluleke said he hopes volunteers will not wait till Mandela’s birthday to return.

“It has been a huge success and we had a lot of people we did not expect. The patients are happy and the clinic looks much cleaner because of the extra hands we had,” said Maluleke.
Leaders, including US President Barack Obama, hailed Madiba as a man with extraordinary vision, leadership and spirit.

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma paid tribute to the father of the nation describing Mandela as the man who single-handedly healed a broken country.

Newly crowned British Open Winner Louis Oosthuizen also sent Madiba his message.
“I would like take the opportunity to say happy birthday to Mr. Nelson Mandela back in South Africa, he is 92-years-old today. He is an amazing person and happy birthday to him,” said Oosthuizen. Source EWN
