News : More World Cup visitors to head to SA

With the 2010 FIFA World Cup half way over, South Africa is expected to see a fresh wave of tourists entering the country to see final matches. Since the beginning of this month, more than two million people have touched down on South African soil.

Private sector tourism body Satsa said while some tourists are already heading home more Argentinean, Brazilian and German fans could be on their way. Satsa CEO Micheal Tatalias said those leaving would try and sell their World Cup tickets paving the way for other fans to attend matches.

“FIFA’s website does allow you to put your tickets back into the pool. People are saying they do not want to stay long way from home, to watch a team that is not great for me,” said Tatalias.

Eyewitness News asked foreigners if the World Cup results affect whether they stay or go.
“We are going to stick around for a little while,” said a tourist.

“I am leaving with many vuvuzelas and some wine,” said another.

One thing is for sure, everyone polled by Eyewitness News said they are enjoying the vibe, culture and scenery in South Africa.
The expected influx of tourism comes as Brazilian fans are more optimistic than ever, that their team will win the World Cup this year.

The Samba Boys beat Chile 3 nil at Ellis Park on Monday night taking them to the quarter finals.

Brazil fans said their team has a clear path to the World Cup final and even though they are facing the Netherlands in the quarter finals, soccer fans said they have faith in the South American football players.

“We are winning this World Cup,” said a Brazilian fan.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing evening for Chile fans but the Samba Boys have a major support base who are more than ready to celebrate another win.

Soccer fans despondent about not getting World Cup tickets have a reason to smile as more are being made available. Spectators whose soccer teams have been knocked out of the tournament are now returning their tickets.

Around 6000 cards were released during Ghana’s clash with the US on Saturday night. British supporters had expected England to take part in that match.

“There are always tickets for sale during this time of the tournament. Match announces on a daily basis as and when the tickets become available,” said the 2010 Organising Committee’s Rich Mkhondo. Source EyeWitness News
