Reviews : Suicide girl passed five matric exams

Nomsa Mokone didn't see her name in the newspaper matric results, so she hanged herself.

She died on Thursday morning before she saw the official statement with her matric results.

Nomsa had done well in five subjects and failed only maths and physical science - the subjects she had complained about the entire festive season. She had qualified for supplementary exams in March.

Nomsa had been planning to study graphic design.

The 17-year-old from Emndeni South, Soweto, who was a pupil at Thabo Senior Secondary School in Naledi, was so enthusiastic about the course that she had already done some sketches.

But, around 7am, her lifeless body was found by her sister, Alice Leballo, in one of the back rooms of the house used to store building materials.
By 11am, her body was still hanging as police investigators gathered evidence.

Her family said the teenager had gone to the shop down the road from her home to buy a newspaper.

Her name wasn't in the paper. When she got home, Nomsa headed straight for the back room, locked the door and hanged herself.

Leballo had tried to get hold of Nomsa around 11pm on Wednesday, but her phone was off. When Leballo arrived home on Thursday morning, Nomsa wasn't inside the house.

It was only when Leballo went around to the back room to check if Nomsa was there that she made the gruesome discovery.

Nomsa's friend, Lebogang Mabalane, who attended the same school, said Nomsa was looking forward to getting her results, but was also anxious.

Lebogang said Nomsa had told her that other people killed themselves if they failed matric.
