News : World Cup Fans Warned to be Aware of Ticket Scams

England is warning people who are still to buy their world cup tickets to be aware of online ticket scams as almost half a million Britons have been duped by hoax World Cup ticket sellers since the launch of World Cup Ticket sales last year.

Research from online ticket marketplace Viagogo has shown that thousands of British fans have already fallen victims of this crime in the past 12 months.

Two people were also arrested this week on suspicion of fraud after an internet company from West Sussex sold costly World Cup packages before revealing it had gone bust.

The company offered a range of packages for the tournament, from a £1,750 budget deal to a £3,800 package to see the final, all including travel and accommodation in three-star game lodges.

Mark Ashton said he paid more than £3,000 for a two-week trip to watch the qualifying stages in June but became concerned when the company was unable to provide any invoices for him and his four friends' flights and accommodation.

Mr Ashton, who paid for the package through PayPal, said his party received an email from the company to say it was going into liquidation and the matter was in the hands of their accountants.

According to the Office of Fair Trading, this isn’t a new thing at all since one in 12 ticket buyers are caught out by fraud each year.

Michele Shambrook, from advice service Consumer Direct, said they encourage football fans to be extremely cautious and investigative when they buy their tickets online.

"We encourage everyone buying tickets to events overseas to be especially vigilant and on the lookout for potential scams.
"When buying from websites that may be in a different language it can be even harder to ensure it is legitimate.

"Make sure you put the website's name into a search engine and see what other people are saying about it.
