Reviews : Schoolgirl grills Michelle Obama

America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama, struggled with an unexpected question from a little girl who asked what the mother’s nation has in store for illegal immigrants.

The unexpected question was posed during Obama’s visit to an elementary school to discuss US immigration policy on Wednesday.

During this question-and-answer meeting with students, a shy little girl raised her hand and said: "My mom says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn't have papers."

The awkward moment came as the first ladies, Michelle Obama and Margarita Zavala fielded with the question. Finally she said: "That's something that we have to work on to make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers."

"But my mom doesn't have any papers," the girl added.

"But we have to work on that, we have to fix that, in that everybody's got to work together in Congress to make sure that happens," Michelle Obama said reassuringly.

What to do with an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States is a hot-button issue on both sides of the US-Mexican border. Calderon began his visit on Wednesday calling a tough, new immigration law in Arizona a form of "discrimination".

Obama later agreed after their talks that "the Arizona law has the potential of being applied in a discriminatory fashion," in his latest criticism of the legislation.

The US president told a joint press conference he had directed the Justice Department to look "very carefully at the language of this law," and report back soon whether it "comports with our core values and... legal standards".

He also issued a new push for comprehensive immigration reform in the US Congress, which observers believe has little chance of approval amid the partisan fervor of a congressional election year. - Sapa-AFP
