Views : KZN ANCYL doesn't endorse Malema

The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal does not endorse the league’s president, Julius Malema and it has not decided to support his re-election in next year's elective conference, it said on Wednesday.

"As KwaZulu-Natal we don't support the individuals. We support the current leadership of the youth league," said ANCYL provincial chairman Mxolisi Kaunda.

He was reacting to an earlier statement by ANCYL provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo, saying "We want the status quo to remain in the national leadership as our president Julius Malema is still very young and we don't see a need to change the leadership."

The issue of Malema’s relocation has divided the KwaZulu-Natal ANCYL in half with those supporting Malema on the side and those against his re-election wanting to replace with his deputy, Andile Lungisa.

The KwaZulu-Natal branch is due to choose its new leadership over the weekend at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Howard College. Mtolo is among those who will stand for re-election while Kaunda will not as he turns 36 in September while the league's age limit is 35.

Malema is expected to attend this conference, which is scheduled to begin on Friday and end on Sunday. Kaunda said KwaZulu-Natal delegates would not be allowed to wear T-shirts with Malema’s face as evidenced during the Eastern Cape congress.

Kaunda also said the ANCYL in the province also supports the ANC leadership led by President Jacob Zuma.
His statement came after reports that Malema is campaigning for the replacement of ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe by former ANCYL president, Fikile Mbalula in 2012. - Timeslive
