How To Rock Climb Safely

For physical fitness, fun and, yes, adrenaline, nothing beats rock climbing. Try these tips and advice for first time rock climbing.

Picture yourself climbing a ladder when you begin to climb, stay calm and relaxed and move from one hold to the next.

Stay in the best possible shape, focusing on lower arm, hand grip as well as finger strength.

Keep your body close to the wall. Understandably, sometimes you would need to lean back a bit to see the route ahead of you, but other than that try to keep as close as possible. When you tend to lean back a lot you will lose your balance and your grip from the holders.

Wear clothes that are not restrictive and won't get in the way of you or the rope. Your clothes should enable you to manage moisture and allow you to stay warm or cool while climbing.

Improve your arm grip by doing exercises that can improve the strength of your arms and wrist/forearm region. Try using a squeeze ball often to strengthen the wrist and hand region; also try lifting small weights front and sideward to gain more strength.

As a beginner it’s always better to go slowly, since you are just learning the art of climbing and don't want to compete with others. Rock climbing is not a race, it’s just a sport challenge so don’t rush to finish before everyone else does.

Fearing heights is normal. Climbing is all about overcoming that fear. A good way of not thinking about this fear is not to look down any further than your feet to correctly place them on the best part of the hold.
