The Official Trailer Of Long Walk To Freedom Starring Idris Elba & Naomi Harris
The Official Trailer Of Long Walk To Freedom Starring Idris Elba & Naomi Harris

This movie has been making the buzz in the social media, it could run for most talked about movie this year , our wait and anticipation is almost at the end. Distant horizon has released an official trailer of the movie about Nelson Mandela’s journey as a freedom fighter to first democratically elected president in South Africa.

The Movie is an adaption of the book Long Walk to freedom, and shares the same title, starring British born actor Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, Elba is no stranger to big screens. He has starred in many films including Ghost riders and Obsessed alongside US born singer and entertainer Beyonce Knowles.

I have not yet seen the full movie, I base all my opinions on the 2; 31 long trailer, I confidently say Idris did a good job of portraying our former statesman, Mandela is a tall and well built man and I need not remind anybody how hot Mr Elba is, like Nelson Mandela too he is very popular with the ladies, whoever casted dim did his research.

Though Elba is British born he has proved that he can change accents in a second to fit in a role, his strong British accent is completely dead in this movie, though he doesn’t quit fully pull a South African accent, he sounds like a black African man, a bit too strong for a South African but very African and you can hear Mandela’s unique accent here and there.

South African words, Nelson Mandela is of Nguni tribe, and during the days of the struggle many ‘slogans, toyi, toyi/ March songs and praises” were sang and said in Nguni, mainly Zulu language. There is not much singing or slogan chanting in the trailer but there’s a part where he shouts “Amandla” and he nails it.

The case of Winnie, I’m going to be a bit biased here but I think they should have given this role to a south African actress, I have nothing against Naomi Harris, but I feel a south African woman who understands the culture and has heard more about Mama’ Winnie would have been perfect for former first lady role, her strong South African accent and closeness to the subject would have made the viewer totally ignore Ildris’s occasionally slip offs. Not saying that Miss Harris does not relate to Winnie but someone from home would have been more appropriate.

Overall this looks like a great movie, we will let you know when is it coming to our South African cinemas.
