3 Year Olds Trafficked in Wales Bookmark and Share
3 Year Olds Trafficked in Wales A report carried out on the behalf of the Children’s Commissioner for Wales has revealed that children as young as three years old are being trafficked into the country for sex.

According to the report, the children are being trafficked from China, Bangladesh and Nigeria after the perpetrators deceive their parents.

The children are exploited for sex, domestic servitude, street crime, cannabis production and forced labour, the report adds.

Commissioner Keith Towler said in a report that they have uncovered 32 cases of children being exploited.

"Many will have experienced at least one form of abuse and some have spoken about being raped, beaten, tortured and deprived of their basic needs and enslaved.

“Trafficked children and young people are moved from their country of origin to one or more new countries by individuals or gangs who have tricked or deceived them,” Towler said, adding: "It is essential that when they are found they receive the full care and protection of the statutory services."

Towler warned that these findings could only be the tip of the iceberg and have therefore made several recommendations to the Welsh Assembly.

One of their recommendations is to have an all-Whales group on trafficking set up to combat the problem and prevent further children from being exploited.

Towler said he hoped their findings will help people realise that the problem does exist in Whales.

"For child trafficking to be tackled effectively there first has to be an acceptance that it exists," he said.
