The first birthday is a milestone and every family wants to create a celebration that will be remembered for years to come. First birthday parties do not have to be stressful and they do not have to leave you with an empty wallet. Read below for some exciting new ideas on planning your child’s first birthday party.
Choose a theme that is popular amongst children. In style themes are Winnie the pooh, Sesame street, Barney, Thomas the train, Disney, Noah’s ark, Circus, or you could base the theme around your child’s favourite toy or TV show.
Bring out the creative side of you and save money at the same time by making your own invitations and party décor. If not then all you have to do is purchase a party kit to match the theme of your party. Keep the décor simple yet fun, making sure that none of the decorations will pose as a choking hazard for the children.
Choose a time that fits in with your child’s daily routine. I have attended many parties where the birthday boy or girl falls asleep during the main events of the party. Remember to keep the party short since the children have different routines and some of the guests may need to leave early.
Choose a location that is familiar to your child. The best place to have the party is at home; since you will not have to lug around any party supplies. However, if you want to choose an outside location away from home; then choose a park or playground that you visit on a regular basis. When choosing a location be sure that there is enough space for you to set up all the planned games and activities. Arrive early so that you can choose an ideal spot to set up.

Games are fundamental at any child’s party. For a first birthday party you would need to include games and activities that are simple yet fun like finger painting, puppet shows and sing-a-longs. Organise a play area with building blocks and other toys that kids could play with.
Choosing food can be tricky as some children and adults enjoy different foods. Choose something simple that everyone will enjoy. It is a good idea to have snack trays. It is convenient and you can include food that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. For a savoury snack try and include chicken nuggets, meatballs, vegetable sticks, crackers, breadsticks and cocktail sausages with a tasty dipping sauce. You can also include a sweet tray with fruit kebabs, marshmallows, wafers and a chocolate dipping sauce. Other foods that you can serve are mini sandwiches, mini pizzas, canapés, etc.
The birthday cake is the highlight of the party. If you are quite the domestic goddess then you can bake your own birthday cake. Some home industries and party supply shops have 3D cake pans that you can hire. Decide on a flavour that will be enjoyed by both the children and the adults. A good idea is to serve cupcakes as they are easy to serve and you can mix flavours. Themed cupcake towers can be created for an attractive birthday cake alternative. Consider making mini cupcakes for the smaller children to ensure that there is no wastage.
Deciding what to put into the party packs for one-year-olds can be tricky since many toddlers do not eat goodies that normally go into a party pack – as they may choke on it. Instead of the usual unhealthy treats, you can fill the party packs with a fruit juice, soft jelly sweets, and jelly or custard cups. Another idea instead of giving guests a party pack is to give them a party favour. For example a small soft toy, crayons, or a small plastic ball, depending on the budget you have for your child’s party.
