Christmas day is a time when friends and family get together over good food and reminisce about good times together. We all love to enjoy a hearty meal on Christmas day but we don’t want to spend the whole day slaving over a hot stove. Plan your Christmas meal in advance and enjoy a stress-free Christmas this year.
There are many ways that you could avoid cooking on Christmas day depending on how you plan to spend the day and if you have a good plan in place you could be left with little or even no cooking on Christmas day.
Plan a “cook ahead” menu which will allow you to do all the preparation and most of the cooking a few days in advance. This is a must for anyone who enjoys the tradition of a good home cooked meal on Christmas day. If you plan it well then you will be left with very little cooking on Christmas day. Plan your menu early so you are left with enough time for shopping and trying out any new recipes. Prepare and season your roasts the night before and then just pop them into the oven early on Christmas morning.

If you cannot cook your meal the day before then do all of the ground work and the preparations the night before. Cut up your vegetables and keep them in cold water, lay out all your spices and other food ingredients on your kitchen counter the night before and make sure that any meat that you will be using has been defrosted and is ready to use. Choose to make pasta meals like lasagna that can be made a few days before and kept in the freezer. Desserts are becoming an important part of a meal and mark the end of a memorable meal. Choose desserts like trifle, fridge tarts, cheesecake or chocolate mousse that can be made the night before. Not everything on your menu has to be made from scratch. Save time by buying ready made sauces, chicken or turkey that has already been stuffed and ready made desserts.
Another way to enjoy a stress free Christmas is to host a “bring and come” get together with family and friends. This will cut cooking to a bare minimum and leave you with enough time to relax and enjoy the day. Plan the lunch or dinner menu with all the guests who will be attending so that everyone knows exactly what to bring. If you don’t mind digging a little deeper into the coffers you could hire a private chef or caterer and avoid cooking all together.
The most stress free way to enjoy a good Christmas meal is to eat out. Eating out on Christmas day is becoming more and more popular. Many hotels and restaurants offer a full Christmas lunch and dinner on Christmas day. Make reservations at your favourite restaurant and avoid the temptation of visiting a new one since there’s a chance you might not like the food and that would ruin your Christmas. Call in advance to make reservations as popular restaurants are booked out early.
