Authorities Blamed for Soccer Riot in Egypt

Egypt has announced three days of mourning after dozens of soccer fans were killed in a bloody riot that saw rival fans turn on each other. The death toll for the riot in Port Said sits at 74, with scores more injured during the Wednesday evening match in Cairo. The riot followed a match between Al-Masry, the Port Said home team, and the popular Al-Ahly, based in Cairo. It was the deadliest soccer-related violence since 1996. Many of the victims were crushed to death, others were stabbed or suffocated after being trapped in a long corridor, attempting to flee rival fans carrying clubs, knives and stoned. Egyptian activists are accusing police and military personnel of standing by while the violence took place, refusing to get involved.

Europe Death Toll Rises In Big Freeze

Rescue helicopters have evacuated dozens of people from snow-blocked villages in Serbia and Bosnia as a severe cold spell affects Eastern Europe. Officials air-lifted emergency food and medical supplies as the number of dead rose to at least 89. Forty-three of the deaths were in Ukraine alone. Emergency crews worked overtime as temperatures plunged to -32.5 C in some areas. European weather alert network Meteoalarm warned of "extremely dangerous" conditions. The weather is also affecting gas supplies. Russia's Gazprom, which supplies a quarter of Europe's gas imports, said it was getting more requests from export markets than it could physically accommodate as demand from Russia spikes. Parts of the Black Sea froze near the Romanian coastline and snow fell on Croatian islands in the Adriatic Sea.
Canned Ham Linked To Diabetes Risk

Research shows that Native Americans who frequently ate processed meat that comes in a can, a common food on reservations and one subsidised by the US government, had a two-fold increased risk of developing diabetes compared to those who ate little or none of the products generically known as "spam." Native Americans are at especially high risk of developing diabetes. By the age of 55, nearly half will have the condition. A study looked into potential reasons for this high rate by taking 2000 Native Americans from Arizona, Oklahoma and North and South Dakota. None of the participants, whose average age was 35, had diabetes at the start of the study when they answered questions about diet and other health and lifestyle factors.
Fears Eased Over Spanish GP

Circuit de Catalunya boss Salvador Servia has dismissed suggestions that the Spanish Grand Prix is in any immediate danger. The Barcelona venue has a deal to stage the race until 2016, but recent reports have suggested that the government want to renegotiate that contract. However, Servia says that the organisers are happy with their current deal and insists that there is "nothing going on" as far as a restructuring of the contract is concerned. He mentioned that the reality is that they have a contract until 2016 and are working towards the 2012 race. Their intention if they can, is to continue until 2020.
Lima Quake Causes Massive Damage

A powerful earthquake injured scores of people, buckled buildings and caused power outages on the coast south of Lima early on Monday. Officials said that there are no immediate reports of fatalities. The epicentre of the magnitude 6.3 quake, which struck eleven minutes after midnight on Sunday, was 23km southeast of the city of Ica, the US Geological Survey said. Memories are still fresh of the powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Ica region on August 15 2007, killing more than 500 people and injured about 200 000. While residents remain jittery, there were no known fatalities on Monday however, at least 145 people were injured and most were taken to hospitals, though the injuries were mostly minor, the Health Ministry said.
Djokovic Proud To Make History

The Serb overcame Rafael Nadal in a gruelling five hours and 53 minutes, also surpassing the record for the longest match in Australian Open history Nadal set when beating Fernando Verdasco in Melbourne three years ago. In a see-saw encounter Djokovic came out on top 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-7 7-5 and immediately pronounced it the best win of his career. Djokovic said that Wimbledon is right up there because it was the tournament he always wanted to win but this comes out on top because they played for almost six hours, and it was incredible.
Sunday afternoon in Houghton Johannesburg was far from relaxed and quiet. Roads were closed as former President Nelson Mandela was moved into his Houghton home. It has been alleged that this move is primarily due to maintenance that is being carried out on his Qunu house.
