If you don’t know who Edward Cullen and Jacob Black are by now, then you probably have been living in a cave since last year. Stephanie Meyer’s young adult vampire romance book series, the Twilight Saga, has captured the hearts of tweens and young adults alike. Since the release of the movie Twilight, just about everywhere you look is a poster of the smouldering eyes of Edward Cullen. With New Moon, the second of the four part book series, being released on the big screen later this year, the question on everyone’s lips is whether you are on Team Edward or Team Jacob.
Team Edward
Edward Cullen is portrayed by the British actor, Robert Pattinson, whom you may remember as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire/Order of the Phoenix. Edward is a 17 year old vampire (though technically he is 104 years old) who falls in love with a human teenager, Bella Swan, who just can’t seem to resist his hypnotising charms. Edward Cullen is the ultimate dream guy and just about every woman’s Mr. Right. He is polite and always puts Bella first. He is very protective of her and there is nothing he wouldn’t do to make sure she is safe and happy – which becomes a full time job thanks to her being accident prone. He is impossibly beautiful and Bella likens him to the Greek god, Adonis.
His come to bed green eyes (which turns topaz) would leave any woman breathless. Edward also sparkles in the sun as if he has diamonds sparkling off his body. His thin but muscular body is a sight for sore eyes. Whenever Bella is around him her heart beats at an irregular pace and she goes weak at the knees – literally sometimes.

Romantic Moments:
- Professing his undying love for Bella every time he sees her in his outdated 19th century speech.
- Saving Bella from horny men in a dark alley just as they were about to no doubt take away her “virtue”.
- Buying Bella a missile proof Mercedes Guardian to protect her from-well-everything.
- Watching over her every night as she sleeps to make sure she is okay and singing her to sleep with her very own lullaby.
Traits to save Bella:
- Superhuman strength to protect her from the Chris Browns’ of the world.
- Agility and speed to chase down anyone tries to harm Bella.
- Can read the minds of everyone including men thinking perverted thought of his Bella.
Team Jacob
Jacob Black is portrayed by American actor, Taylor Lautner, who is best known for his roles in Cheaper by the Dozen and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3D. Jacob is the youngest of the bunch but by the end of the series towers most of his friends with his muscular body. Jacob is Native American boy who is head-over-heels in love with Bella – though the feeling is not mutual. In New Moon he discovers that he is a shape shifter and can morph into a werewolf. His ancestors’ sworn enemy is none other than the vampires. Like Edward, Jacob will do anything to protect Bella from danger. Bella describes Jacob as her own personal sun because every time he is with her she feels happy. Jacob, at 15, is not someone young adult women would like to drool over but when his russet skin becomes muscular and his long hair gets a much needed trim he begins to show signs of being one hot tamale. Jacob is passionate and adventurous. He says what is on his mind without holding back and can be hot headed at times.
Romantic Moments:
- Forcefully kissing Bella and telling her how much she loves him because he thinks she doesn’t want to admit it.
- Risking his life by facing the vampires without his pack to check if Bella is alive and well.
- Ratting Bella out about having a dangerous motorbike just so she can get into trouble and be grounded for life so that she won’t be able to see Edward again.
Okay so Jacob’s romantic moments are extremely one sided but you got to love the boy for trying.
Traits to save Bella:
- Unnatural body temperate (which reaches up to 42.7°C) to keep Bella warm when she would otherwise freeze to death.
- Razor sharp werewolf teeth to rip off the head of anyone who threatens to harm his love.
- He heals quickly which will come in handy when fending off abnormally strong enemies.
As a werewolf Jacob will at some point imprint on a woman who he will be linked to for life. He cannot control who he imprints on but will it be Bella Swan? You’ll just have to read to find out.
Werewolves and vampires have never been so hot. So who makes the better lover? On one hand you have the romantic and perfect Edward who makes your heart pump custard and on the other you have the adventurous Jacob whose impressive abs would put any man to shame. Edward wins, but just barely, thanks to his ultimate dream guy status. But give Jacob a couple more years and he could very well steal the title of best lover from right under Edward’s nose.
