Pamper Hamper

Congratulations to Mrs. Sharlene van Noordwyk who is the winner of our May “Pamper Hamper” competition.

We will be contacting you shortly with more information on your prize.

Here is the winning letter:

She’s the lady who thought she’d be childless after she had no hope of falling pregnant after 35 years old. She even laughed at the doctor when he told her to get out the champagne. Since then she never lets any opportunity pass to be an ultimate mom, not only to me, but to anyone needing help & guidance. She has only one child, but she is known to be a Kimberley-mom to many others. She deprives herself of most things to be able to see that I have everything I need. She takes any and every chance to be my mom and is very successful at it. She cares and worries and loves and never stops. Another thing that never stops is advice and questions: A mother’s secret to keeping her daughter on the right path. There isn’t enough space to tell you what she has guided and carried me through in life. Nothing compares – I dread the day I lose my mom, but she deserves everything God has to offer her...

R1000 Gift Hamper Winner

R1000 Gift Hamper Winner

Thank you to all our readers for sending in their best and worst Valentine’s Day experiences. Judging from the numerous emails we received, it is clear there are some great guys out there who spoil their partners during the month of love. That said, there is still a large number of men who should be banished to planet Mars for their dodgy Valentine’s Day behaviour. Congratulations to Thea Eksteen from Auckland Park who has won our romantic gift hamper worth R1000. We will be contacting you shortly.

Winning Letter: He’s Just Not that Into You

My bad experience:

It was our first Valentine’s Day celebration and I wanted to make it special. I ordered this fancy romantic platter, with prawns, oysters, champagne, chocolates, rose petals and candles. I wanted to make it look like a romantic setup out of a storybook.

I took the afternoon off and went to his flat to setup this surprise. (I had my own key). I decorated the table with candles in a red and white theme. The rose petals were scattered from the door, right up to the bed, where I had placed the chocolates and decorated the room with candles. The bath was almost ready with lots of foam, candles and rose petals. I put on soft, romantic music to set the ambiance. I was ‘dressed to kill’ in a very sexy little number and the soft smell of perfume was around me, waiting and ready to treat the man in my life…

Then things started to go wrong…

I received a phone call from him, saying that he is having a couple of beers with his friends and will phone me when he is on his way home. I waited patiently, trying not to get upset, as I was under the impression he would come home shortly. (Stupid of me to think that in the first place). Minutes started to tick away, soon an hour passed and it was slowly moving on to the next before he stumbles into the flat. He was surprised to realise that I went through all the trouble of setting up the whole spread. He did not even bother buying me a gift of flowers.

He then told me that he had a very big lunch with his friends and was not very hungry, but I must go ahead and have something to eat while he drank another beer. I just looked at him angrily and thought about how our evening would have gone, feeding him the oysters and prawns… disappointed, I started to eat, unwillingly, while tears rolled down my face. This was not how I pictured our evening.

He got up and mumbled that he was going to take a shower. As he walked down the passage he blew out the candles and kicked the rose petals. By then I got the message clearly - he was not into me as much as I was into him. I didn’t even get that ‘twinkle in his eye’ for my sexy little number - I could just as well be his sister.

I went to the bedroom, changed, got all my things and food together (Yes I left him with nothing to eat or drink). I heard him yell that he would be with me as soon as he was done in the bathroom. Ignoring that, I left while he was still in the shower.

An hour later he started phoning me, leaving several messages with my parents that he wanted to speak to me and apologize. I refused to speak to him and the next day had his flat key delivered to him with an invoice or two toward the expenses. He was upset because I made him pay for the food and candles.

The best payback was that he had a running account at the florist. I decided to order myself a bunch of roses in every colour available and had it delivered.

Needless to say that was the end of our relationship. Now after a couple of years I look at Valentine’s Day in a different way. I now spend and enjoy it with a real gem in my life.
